I'm really picky about the music I listen to while I work. It's often not classical, because when I'm listening to classical I usually want to focus on the music. So I'll often revert to rock or ambient or some other genre. If it's classical, I like something zippy but not too raucous - C.P.E. Bach's cello concerti, Handel's Concerti Grossi, or a soundtrack by someone like Max Richter.
It also varies with the work I'm doing:
rote admin tasks = music playing
creative production = no music
Does anyone have a preferred work playlist?
I agree: if there’s a deadline looming, or creativity or concentration is required, I work in silence. But if there’s scope to stop and listen, I might choose Haydn Piano Trios, or Bach Toccatas or French Suites, or the wonderful ‘playlist’ that is BBC Radio 3.
Hi @jen,
So nice to see you here 👋
I, too, like to work in complete silence if the task/ job at hand requires 100% of my attention, otherwise I'd be distracted by the music I'm listening to. If I'm particularly restless or bored, then some jazz, playing in a very low volume, preferably in another room, would be ok.
Oftentimes when I listen to classical music I would either :
a. Hum along if I know the piece (or sing along, at the risk of sounding like a screaming banshee 👻 😆)
b. If it's a piece I'm listening to for the first time, I would strain my ears, and brain, trying to absorb as much as I can, losing track of everything around me!
Both cases are not very good for productivity, I'm afraid.
Cheerio 🤗,
Dinah
