Zemlinsky and Schubert (played by Quatuor Arod)
An exciting discovery this week has been Zemlinsky's amazing 2nd quartet, played here with great passion
I was led to Quatuor Arod (yet another marvellous string quartet - how many are there in the world?) by a recommendation of their performance of Schubert's Death and the Maiden quartet
Their performance bowled me over. They bring great drama to the slow movement (variations on the song) and the outer movements are thrilling.
The early quartet D46, written when Schubert was 16, is also highly enjoyable.
